Dreambox
A letter and login information went home in last week’s Tuesday folder for a new online math program called Dreambox. This program is new to CCE. We are trying to get up to speed. To help out, please have your child log on at home. If you experience problems using the login and password provided, have your student let me know. If you have already tried, try once more just to be sure. Once I have all the COPPA permission letters back at school, I will begin assigning specific skills to be completed in class/at home. Thank you for your help with this.
Math Extra Credit/Comet Cash
We have been practicing decimal addition and estimating. We did an activity this past week, where students were tasked with “purchasing” 10 items from HEB by first estimating the total cost and then finding the actual cost. We have been discussing the use of this skill - decimals/money/estimation - in relation to the real world as it really is one of the math skills you will use frequently. With that in mind, I offer -
Grocery Shopping Challenge
Students go shopping with their parent(s) and keep a list of items bought and estimate the item’s cost. Before checking out (or as you go) the student should estimate the cost of all the items (not including tax). Students should note if the estimate is an overestimate or an underestimate. Then check out as normal. Compare the actual cost of the items (before tax) to the student’s estimate. Students should turn in list of times with both the estimated total and the actual total. Students should figure out how far off from the actual their estimate was. This should be done when you are purchasing at least 15 items. Challenge must be completed by Feb. 8th.
Clear, 2-Liter Soda Bottles with Lids Needed
A favorite activity in 5th grade Science is building Aquaterras (half aquarium, half terrarium). Each aquaterra requires (2) 2- liter, crystal clear (not green), smooth soda/water bottles. With several sets, we can offer smaller groups and more hands on opportunities for our students. 5th grade teachers are offering comet cash for the bottles. Please think of us if you have a party or an event with these types of bottles. We would appreciate them rinsed out and with the label peeled off as cleanly as possible. We need at least 56 bottles in all for the experiment. The smoother, the better. Thank you!
